The fact that you can paint realistically is incredible - almost like magicians when they make people go "How the fuck did he do that??" - but for me what makes this kind of painting wonderful (this, also "Claire" and "Claire Cogar" and "Katy" and many others in your gallery) is the contrast between the initial feeling of realism followed by realisation of the soft, blurred colours and textures of the skin (and hair, and fabric, etc), combined with the emotion that is usually exuded from the subject's expression and posture.
Someone could probably capture the same emotions in these subjects' faces with a camera, but I wouldn't really get this over all feeling from a photo.
